shipping container turned into a workshop

When buying or renting an onsite shipping container, whether for a jobsite or tradeshow, you don’t want to just throw your items in a heap on the floor. You need some kind of accessories so your stuff stays organized and safe. That’s why it’s a good idea to consider optional accessories and modifications to make your workflow go more smoothly.

Here are some ways you can accessorize your onsite shipping container.

Bicycle Storage

If your employees pedal to the jobsite, whether out of necessity or for fitness, you need to offer a safe storage spot for their bicycles that protects them from the sun, wind, and rain. You can purchase sturdy bike racks in 20-foot lengths, which can hold up to 25 bikes. These racks fasten to the ceiling of your storage units, and then the bikes hang by their tires.

Even if you don’t have bike riders on staff, these racks can still come in handy. For instance, if you’re a bicycle retailer, you can use these racks for extra inventory. You can then easily rotate out new models depending on the season. This can prevent clutter from building up in your store’s main warehouse.

Utilize Wall Space

It’s smart to make use of your vertical space. This is when pipe racks come in handy, making a great place to store plumbing pipes, electrical conduits, and lumber. This increases your floor space which can be better used to store tools, parts, and accessories. This storage solution makes for easy inventory management and retrieval.

You could also use some extra shelving as well, such as three-tier shelving ideal for storing small parts, tools, small pieces of equipment and even storage bins.

Wall Dividers

You can install wall dividers to keep certain items separated for convenience, safety or necessity. Not only can divider walls be used to separate tools and parts, they can divide the work area of your container with a break room for workers, for instance.

Ramps and Locks

To make moving bulky or heavy items into and out of your shipping containers easier, you can use ramps. Then, when balancing heavy equipment on pallet jacks, carts, and hand trucks, you can do so easily without having to lift anything. Ramps are a good alternative to laying down asphalt to gain smooth access to your storage container, plus they are ideal for uneven surfaces.

Cargo doors can be broken into by diligent thieves. That’s why you need sturdy padlocks on the doors to prevent this. You can rent or purchase locks designed for your particular latching or locking mechanism.

Mobile Offices

As we said above, you can use wall dividers to separate containers into two or more sections, particularly useful for 20- and 40-foot units. If you’re planning to use your container for mobile office space, you have many options at your disposal to make it comfortable and convenient for all your employees.

Some units come prewired for electrical outlets and lighting, which especially helps with hybrid storage/office use. You can get your unit modified for specific use as a mobile office. It will then come delivered to your site with all your requirements already installed, such as grated windows, AC units, and personnel entry doors. You can also get 200-amp electrical panels mounted for your office section, as well as a communication panel.

You could also incorporate a table or some built-in workbenches. You can even specify one section of the unit be unfinished if its sole purpose is just to provide storage. But even in this case, that section should still have a light mounted on the wall so you can see what you’re storing.

You can also add accessories after the fact. Perhaps after a week of work, you notice you could really use extra shelving. This is an easy modification to make. Just keep in mind that if you’re renting the unit, you can’t make permanent changes to it. If you bought the unit, well, then – have at it!

Mobile onsite offices aren’t just good for construction sites. They can be used as adjuncts to business offices, schools, fairs, carnivals, and concerts. The possibilities are endless!
