5 Reasons Why You Need a Refrigerated Shipping Container

A refrigerated shipping container is also referred to as a cold storage container. They can also be called “reefers” for short, and are, in a nutshell, large refrigerators that can be used to move temperature-controlled food stuffs such as produce, meat, seafood, vegetables and dairy.

You will also see reefers transporting non-food products, too, such as flowers and pharmaceuticals. Because they must maintain a consistent temperature over the miles and oceans they must cross, they are sought after in the industry for their consistent temperatures that can last the entire duration of the regional, national or overseas trip.

They pull double duty as portable short- and long-term storage units that can easily handle long trips due to the ability to plug into power stations on ships. Alternatively, they can feature clip-on generators.

On top of that, transocean reefers have secure lockable doors, are wind and water tight, and won’t fall victim to moisture.

1. Wide Temperature Ranges

Refrigerated containers can sustain a temperature range of -30 degrees F to 80 degrees F. Translation: one unit is able to keep goods cold or warm depending on what their intended purpose is. Even in the worst of conditions, reefers are designed to maintain or lower the temperature of the shipped goods.

2. Airflow

Air must be able to flow freely through the cabin in all areas and directions in order for the specific temperature of frozen goods to stay consistent. In essence, air has to flow upwards, under and alongside the transported goods in the case of frozen foods, while in the case of chilled goods, air has to flow around, under and inside the products themselves.

3. Cost Efficient Transportation

If you’re looking to invest in a purchase of a reefer, this is a wise choice. You may shell out a lot more at first, as opposed to renting, but it will pay off in the long run.

Indeed, you will get a cost savings, not to mention peace of mind in the knowledge that your goods are stored and transported in a temperature-controlled environment. Your product will remain at the proper temperature and moisture levels at all times, extending its shelf life and preventing spoilage.

4. Portable Nature

Due to their portable nature, reefers can be moved anywhere over any distance. There’s no worrying about spoilage, as the refrigeration component of the container is always consistent, whether you’re transporting food, flowers, or medicine.

5. Variety of Uses

Perhaps the best quality of a reefer is its versatility. You can use refrigerated containers for purposes other than ocean transport of goods, such as for the following events, industries and purposes:

  • Vaccine storage
  • Food and Beverage Distribution
  • Pharmaceutical storage
  • Restaurants and hotels
  • Floral Industry
  • Agriculture Storage
  • Seasonal festivals and fairs
  • Chemical Supply and Manufacturing
  • Medical/Biomedical
  • Seafood Wholesale
  • Produce Storage
  • Meat Processing
  • Inventory Overflow Storage
  • Commercial or Industrial Kitchen Remodels
